Space Shuttle Challenger
It was January 28, 1986 and I remember I was home sick from school, but I watched the Challenger takeoff on tv. I remember seeing the explosion and thinking something terrible had happened but the announcers never showed any emotion. It was really strange. Do you remember where you were? Read more about the Challenger disaster here.

I remember seeing it on the Big Screen TV in the Library at JHS. We were all in shock. We were so used to launches being easy. I still can't believe we lost another shuttle during re-entry a few years ago.
I was such a NASA fan as a kid. I went to Space Camp when I was 12. Last year, we took the kids to the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. Tonya and I wanted to take time to read all the info but the kids just jumped from one display to the next. We saw the Mars Rover movie at IMAX and it was awesome!
Like Charles, I watched it on the TV in the library. I think it was Kim Morgan who told me at the lunch table that "the shuttle exploded." So I spent the rest of lunch watching it.
When Columbia disintegrated in re-entry a few years back, I was having to tell some of the young interns and recent college grads on our newspaper staff about Challenger, because they were too young to remember it! Talk about feeling old.
That was SO horrible! I remember that at our Spring (?) band concert we dedicated a song that we played/sang to those astronauts. It was called "Who Puts His Trust In God Most Just". I could hardly get through the song without crying.
